Database connection problem with XOOPS

I am new to all this, so not sure if I have overlooked something simple. I have setup Apache ok and can view the XOOPS startup pages on the local host. When I come the the database settings I leave host name as "local host", database username blank, then "XOOPS" for database name and a password. All goes well until the "check database" section when it says it cannot connect. Any ideas?

managed to sort it after reading another thread. I should have used root rather than localhost as host name. Thanks

it's wrong because it should be like this

host: localhost
username: root
password: (blank, if you didn't setup password yet)

However, you might still encounter problem because you didn't create database for it yet
