installed ok.

but nothing ever seems to ask me for a password, I always go straight in. (to phpmyadmin, php/mysql applications, mysql console etc).

Is this normal?

I've changed the root password and other passwords, but I still go straight into php/mysql applications, mysql console, without it asking for a password.

(infact I'm not even sure who I'm logged in as (root or first user created).

it's normal, so don't worry about it if you only run as local network within trusted friends.

btw, the way you said, I think you mean phpMyAdmin's Central Copy, the isp style, also the production style, which might not fully supported here, look like this:

[i117.photobucket.com]

In which each user has to provide a set of username and password to login your MySQL database through phpMyAdmin; then, (s)he can only uses her/his assigned database only, and of course unable to see and/or access the others' databases.
