Permission problems

I just installed WAMP last night and I've attempted to install a couple of PHP based open source applications. I seem to consistantly be running into permission problems. I am well versed at setting permissions for PHP applications on Linux, less so on Windows so that may be where my problems are occuring.

I've set the root for the web server in the default location of www. I've noticed that every folder I place in this location has "Read Only" checked with a square, not a regular checkmark. If I uncheck it, click "Ok", then go back in to the properties it's as if it didn't take effect and its checked again. I'm running Windows XP Pro with service pack 2.

I couldn't seem to find any documentation on this site concerning permissions or other related issues. Can someone please point to this doco if its available or perhaps offer any suggestions?

Thanks
