WampServer

i need some clarification on this, since im kida a newbie at this. what is the difference between these two extensions?? I am able to run scripts with the .pl extension but cannot run any scripts with the .cgi extension. When i run the .cgi ext i get a file download box asking me if i want to save or open file????? Is there something that I am doing wrong?? Please help me understand, thanks!!!
