should you have installed WAMP, then try to test to see if it's working by going to [localhost] or [127.0.0.1] and your browser just 'hangs there' there are some things you can do:
check to see if anything else is running on Port 80 of your computer. The 2 main culprits of this are the internet phone program SKYPE and Microsoft's IIS. (if you have XP home edition you don't have to worry about IIS as it is not available for that version of Windows!) You can keep SKYPE, just don't have it running when you want to install Apache. To uninstall IIS, go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows Components (located in the left panel) and then navigate to the listing IIS. If it is checked, you need to un-check it then click Next to uninstall. THIS WILL TAKE A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF TIME. This is normal, as most Microsoft programs are "special children."

Hope this helps!

Cheers
