Windows 10 is the deathknell of computing and the internet. I am THROUGH with microsoft.

It works just fine on my Windows 10.

Start by making sure that all the MSVC runtimes mantioned in this post are installed, they dont come out of the box with Windows 10.

Thank you for the reply. I really appreciate any help you can offer. I have little experience with networking/sys admin issues that seem to be required in the troubleshooting, but I'm doing what I can. I'm trying to get wamp going so I can learn and work on wordpress locally instead of in the wild. I'm now about twenty hours into trying to get wamp installed, and almost ready to give it up and take a crack at dentistry instead. Pardon my sarcasm -- I'm exasperated (not with wamp, but with Bill Gates and his windows 10 frankenstein monster).

The experimental checker showed all the VC++ files were there. So, I went through all sixteen VC++ files (eight 32 bit and eight 64 bit) you list at the bottom of "WAMPServer 3 All you need to know", and clicked on repair. I tried installing again, and it didn't hang up this time.

However, after installation, there is no green icon in the task bar, no indication of any wamp folders at the C:\ root, no new programs installed, or any other way I can find to launch wamp. I can't find anything to uninstall to try for a clean installation. The only indication of a wamp folder is in the command line checks below: C:\VTRoot\HarddiskVolume4\wamp64, but I don't know what to do with this info.

I have gone through the twenty-plus items of the troubleshooter several times, and I'm at a loss.

- Show files, folders and hidden drives is checked

- Hide extensions of known file types is unchecked

- 01 first install

- 02 run as admin

- 03 no Skype

- 04 there is no icon in the taskbar

- 05 I see neither Apache nor MySQL services nor wampapache(64) nor wampmysqld(64) appear in Services (task manager>services)

-14 firewall has custom rules to permit inbound 80 and 3306. Does outbound need to be permitted as well?

-15 wampserver has not been uninstalled. I can't find it to uninstall it (doesn't show in ccleaner, for example)

-16 64 bit computer. It would be helpful to advise on the install page that 64bit is considered experimental and that 32 bit is preferred. I didn't notice that until step 16 of the troubleshooting checklist.

Please let me know if any of these items needs to be clarified, or if I misunderstood the the question.

Lastly, the troubleshooting page has a seventeenth VC++ file to install (Update for Universal C Runtime in Windows), that is not on the list at wampserverDOTaviatechnoDOTnet/ or in any of the other lists of VC++ files to install. Is that an issue?

I don't even know what my question is.
What the heck is C:\VTRoot\HarddiskVolume4\wamp64\ ?
How can I uninstall a program that doesn't appear anywhere?

One more thing: I double-checked my hosts file, and saw that the '#' was back at the front of the two lines for IPv4/IPv6 localhost. I had ryn as admin and unchecked read-only from the properties, but I forgot about AV/ASW programs lurking in the background that had to be disabled. So, now, the hosts file is as recommended in the installation steps, but this won't do me any good since wamp had been previously and incorrectly installed, will it?

This folder C:\VTRoot got me thinking.

As far as I can tell, this is created/used by Comodo Anti Virus. something you dont say you are using?

And unfortunatey neither do I. But it appears to be the sandbox folder. Now exactly what sandboxing WAMPServer will do to it I am not really sure, but it would appear to be doing it no good at all.

Can I suggest that you try turning it off, at least while attempting to install WAMPServer.

Yes, you're absolutely right, and I'm an idiot. I thought the empty "Quarantine" on Comodo main screen was the sandbox, but teh sandbox is apparently "Containment," buried several screen layers down in the settings. I disabled Comodo and switched to windows firewall to open up the ports, not realizing Comodo had sandboxed wamp. Simply switching to windows firewall of course didn't do any good because wamp64 was already in the sandbox. I also tried installing wamp32, but with the same results. After your insight about the VTRoot folder being the Comnodo sandbox, I found the settings in Comodo to unblock wamp, figured out (I think) how to keep ports 80 & 3306 open, deleted the VTRoot wamp folders in CCleaner, and tried to install wamp 32 again.

It installed, I launched wamp, and got as far as the orange icon. Checking services, apache isn't loading. I tried using each firewall in turn one at a time, and then with no firewall, but apache still won't load, no green icon.

But wait, it gets worse! Everything loads into the correct root wamp folder EXCEPT the Apache error logs which - wait for it... - which were put into VTRoot, even though I had comodo sandbox disabled! I renamed the wamp log folder in VTRoot, deleted the original folder, launched wamp again (this time with no firewall active), and a new wamp log folder was created in VTRoot, only this time, all folder and file permissions have been removed. I mean really removed. I can't open it in notepad as admin. I can't change file permissions and user roles for the file. I created the hidden windows 10 super administrator account, and even that won't let me modifiy or even open the file. However, I had renamed the first error log the first time through, so I am able include it below.

Between comodo weirdness and windows 10 psychosis, I hope I haven't screwed the pooch on this..

This looks like something else is already using port 80 (the default webserver port number)

Can you run these following 2 lines of code in a command window

netstat -anop TCP | find ":80"
tasklist /FI "PID eq 999" /FO TABLE /NH

replacing 999 with the PID number from the previous command that is using port 80.

Here is a sample output, yours of course will be different

It is most likely IIS as MS seem to think that needs installing on everybodies PC nowadays, but to be sure lets see the output first.

You didnt follow the instructions, you need to change 999 to be the pid number 6880 in your case

Ok I missed the TCPv6 info, so now try

As we are actually interested in the error `could not bind to address [::]:80` which is on the TCPV6 network.

Out of interest, have you followed some dodgy advice to disable your TCPV6 network, have you?

Not that I recall, but it's entirely possible...What are the most likely ways I would be able to disable TCPV6? I have everything disabled now in Comodo, and am just using the native firewall.

This also might be relevant: The first time I load wamp after a boot, I get this error:
httpd.exe Application Error
The application was unable to start correxctly (0xc0000142).

The second time I try to launch, I get the orange icon. Until now, when I try to load after the initial error message above, the orange icon appears briefly and then vanishes. So, it seems I'm now going backwards...</soupir>...

Okay, after endless tinkering, tuning off all AV, firewall, and AWS, I have the orange icon back. Turning back on one by one, it seems maybe spybot was contributing to this mess. Still, Apache Services Admin shows green start, MySql e Services Admin shows red stop button, and php opens to a blank browser screen.

I traced the problem I noted above deleting wamp apache log files from VTRoot to two files that can't be deleted because they are being used by httpd.exe (this after a boot and before launching wamp).

I think at this point I'm going to uninstall wamp and try to reinstall and launch with all AV, firewall, and AWS disabled to see if I can get to the green icon.

Getting to the green icon...this is almost like a video game, without the wizards and wenches...

Okay, after massaging and/or deleting various security programs, all services are active and I can reach the php welcome screen. I guess I learned the hazards of too much security...
