Not working with php upgrade

I have WS 2.1 running with these versions:
php 5.1 through 5.3
apache 2.2.9
mysql 5.5.8
on Windows 7
I need to have php working for 5.2 through 5.6. I thought about upgrading WS but saw posts that said it wouldn't work with the older versions of php. So I opted to try to just add each version.
I installed php 5.4.45. When I tried it, my test site failed to load but I didn't see an error. I thought it might be because 5.4 wouldn't work with my version of apache so I installed apache 2.4. When I try to start WS now it says the apache version is not compatible with the version of php I am using (5.4).
If I switch php back to 5.3 and apache back to 2.2, everything works as before.
I'm not well-versed in all of this and am basically just trying things I found on the web. Would someone please walk me through what I need to do to allow WS to work with all of these versions, if possible?
