WampServer

Tonight for no apparent reason I cannot directly access PHPmyAdmin any more.
I have a green light, I can access localhost, www.directory and the web sites hosted are taking data from the MySQL databases.
I am running WAMPserver 2.1 on Windows XP and have been doing so for a number of years.
Only when I try to access PHPmyAdmin directly do I get

Acess Denied - MySQL says: "The Server is not responding (or the local MySql server's socket is not correctly configured)"

I last used this particular PC on 11 August and the Apache error log looks exactly the same, and there was NO denied access then.
How has the configuration changed ? and what can I do to fix this ?
