Confusing File: httpd.conf

Hello RiggsFolly,

I really appreciate that you have put in several changes to be made to the several Wamp files.

When you suggest to apply changes to httpd.conf: which file do you mean?

1. C:\wamp\bin\apache\apache2.4.4\conf\httpd.conf (This is a BUILD file type )

2. C:\wamp\bin\apache\apache2.4.4\conf\httpd (This is a CONF file type )

The second file is also directly available through the Wamp Manager Icon under Apache 2.4.4 and is also called httpd.conf!!!

Would you please clarify which file, 1 or 2 needs to be changed, cause the changes made to the BUILD file type do not show in the CONF file type?

Thank you,

Caydee

Please don't mind when I say the the only things french that are fantastic are - chicks and food; the rest is all a travesty!

Hi Caydee,

I think you should switch your Explorer to grown-up mode now.

That is in Explorer go to Tools -> Options -> Te View Tab -> and UnCheck the checkbox called 'Hide Extensions of known file tyes

There is only one file called C:\wamp\bin\apache\apache2.4.4\conf\httpd.conf

As a general rule, until you understand a little more about Apache/MySQL/PHP always use the wampmanager menus to edit any conf or ini file for any of these programs.

Hi RiggsFolly,

Thank you!

We both know what the grown-ups mode is..

I look forward to applying your tweaks to fix the slowpoke server.

Have a nice evening!

Nevermind about that; it's all in the game!

However, I am going to be insane soon enough.

The server I notice is real fast though showing me only errors which also used to take ages, but the icon is not growing up beyond Yellow. I've rechecked the settings and changed them just as in your instructions sheet..

If the wampmanager icon is not GREEN then one of the services ( Apache/MySQL ) has not started properly.

How to tell which service is not running if the wampmanager icon is orange.

Left click the wampmanager icon to reveal the menu-> Apache -> Service
If the Start/Resume service menu is Green then Apache IS NOT running.

Left click the wampmanager icon to reveal the menu-> MySQL -> Service
If the Start/Resume service menu is Green then MySQL IS NOT running.

If Apache is the service that is not running it is normally, but not always, because something else has captured port 80.

Now do,
Left click the wampmanager icon to reveal the menu-> Apache -> Service -> Test port 80
This will launch a command window and display some information about what, if anything is using port 80.

Whatever it is should be re-configured to not use port 80 or uninstalled if you are not using it.

If port 80 is not the problem look for errors in the appropriate error log ( use the wamp manager menus to view the error logs )

If these do not exists or show no errors then also check the Windows Event Viewer
Start -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer
And look in the 'Windows Logs' -> Application' section accessed from the menu on the left of the dialog for error messages from Apache and or MySQL.

How to Configure SKYPE so it does not require port 80 or 443

Run SKYPE
then using the menus do this:
Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Connection
Un-Check the checkbox next to 'Use port 80 and 443 as alternatives for incomming connections'
Now restart SKYPE for these changes to take effect.

How to Configure Team Viewer so it does not require port 80 or 443
Run TV
Extras -> Options -> Advanced -> Press the Advanced Button -> Advanced Network Connections
Check the checkbox saying [ Dont use incomming port 80 (recommended for web servers only ) ]

If the problem is not obvious then post the errors here

Hi RiggsFolly,

Had to hit the sack last night.

The problem is with the Apache Service not running. I tried to start it also from services.msc, but to no avail.

On testing Port 80 it shows the "Port 80 is not actually used" and on install service, "Your Port 80 is available, install will proceed." In the browser it refuses to connect to "localhost".

Event Viewer shows the following errors at the moment:

Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x86 9.0.30729.17
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x86 9.0.30729.4148*
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x86 9.0.30729.6161
Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable - x86 10.0.40219
Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Redistributable (x86) - 11.0.61030

These files above are on my computer. Strangely enough there were 2 KB files in the list of 14 updates yesterday, but it eventually installed only one of them, the 2010 version above. There was one other 2010 version already installed which it seems to have over written.

* I found one more version for 2008 - Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x86 9.0.30729.4148 which I also installed now, but seems to have no effect.

I could not find any version of:

Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - KB 2467174 - x86 9.0.30729.5570. It may have to do with language/region specific versions . I am using English US version. Checked also for the KB 2467174, but it did not show any download possibilities anywhere.

Something somewhere seems jinxed, but I can't figure out what or where. Starting the Apache Server invariably crashes the httpd 2.4.4.exe and the MCVCR100.dll as is evident from the Event Viewer crash log below.

Have a nice day in the meanwhile and don't let that ruin your "facetiousness". I will be out most of the day

Install TeamViewer and I will troubleshoot for you. No guarantees but something wierd is going on that we could ping messages to and fro for ages about.

Install TV, then run it.

Do this before attempting a connection.

How to Configure Team Viewer so it does not require port 80 or 443

Run TV
Extras -> Options -> Advanced -> Press the Show Advanced options Button

Look for the section called 'Advanced Network Connections'
Check the checkbox saying [ Dont use incomming port 80 (recommended for web servers only ) ]
Stop and restart TV.

Then
Send me a Private Message containing the TV ID and PASSWORD so I can connect.
Leave TV running as it will change the password each time you restart it.

I am on UK time (GMT) and am normally available 09:00 - 16:00 and normally later into the evening.

Hi RiggsFolly,

Thanks for the offer. I would love to. Actually I'm just at the door leaving for Hamburg. I am in the North of Germany..and have later to pick up my daughter from the airport. Hopefully you are there when I get back. If not then we can do it tomorrow as well. We might do it this evening if I get back on time I have Team Viewer and all that, no problems in that regard.

I'm really obliged about your offer. Next time I'm in London may be we'll drink a beer together if you live near by..

Cheers,

Caydee

Hello RiggsFolly,

Thank you immensely for fixing the Wamp Server configuration on my machine. It is all working perfectly and it is a pleasure to see the Green Light again after several days of Orange frustration.

Hats off and three cheers to your prowess as a trouble shooter..

Nice weekend and happy trails!

Caydee

Hi RiggsFolly,

I changed and put the virtual hosts in Dreamweaver and everything is working properly and securely. However there is one site - my main site file which is not responding. I even put the site (without the .dev extension) in the wamp/www folder). In the old server configuration still present in windows 7 on another machine, it works.

The error in the browser is:

Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator at webmaster@venture-wilderness.com to inform them of the time this error occurred, and the actions you performed just before this error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

The server log shows:
[Tue Feb 18 14:31:52.506882 2014] [core:alert] [pid 4240:tid 868] [client 127.0.0.1:50128] C:/wamp/www/venture-wilderness/.htaccess: Invalid command 'RewriteEngine', perhaps misspelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration.

It is the same error in both cases. There is an .htaccess file on the site, but I cant figure out any mistake in it or whether a "module" is missing in Apache 2.4.4.

Pray you know what is happening!

Regards,

Caydee

Have you activated mod_rewrite in Apache?

left click wampmanager -> Apache -> Apache modules -> rewrite_module

Hope its as simple as that!
