How could I block people from accessing certain parts of my home server

e.g
if given a link, people could access '/folder/picture.jpg or textfile.txt'

but if they tried to shorten the link to try and access '/folder/' they would get an access denied error

Is this possible or does it happen automatically

Could you also talk me through how to do it or point me to a tutorial?
