issues with mysql authentication triggered apache freeze

I'm running XP. I installed two recommended updates - the malicious software removal tool and update rollup for activex killbits. I also was having issues initially logging into phpmyadmin after adding in a root password yesterday. (received 1045 errors)

To fix that, I tried editing the config.inc.php file to reflect the new password. but when I went to test it, localhost was suddenly not found. There are no errors in the apache log. There are no access records in the access log since that point. I reset it back to the original configuration, but nothing is working. I checked port 80, and it says that port 80 is not being used.

I have an orange "wamp" icon. Starting and restopping services isn't working. Going back to the original settings aren't working.

What can I try next?

After you closed the session. I restarted chrome, and now I'm having the same issue with not being able to log into phpmyadmin. Same error as before you set up the login screen.
