localhost homepage not the same as in file

Does anyone have the solution to this problem.
When I click on the icon in the sys tray and click on localhost and click on the project that is in the www folder - the problem is that my index page that comes up is not the same as the index page that is actually in the folder. I thought that it may be a cache type of prob so I cleared the cache and deleted history files and that did not work.
My index page in question is an HTML page not PHP. I would appreciate any input as I'm at my wits end and I'm finding this extremely frustrating especially since I am making changes to my index page.
