when i try to manually start the mysql service nothing happens. I've tried:

- re-installing

- followed this: [superuser.com]

specifically
Quote

Connection to the MySQL server is not allowed using TCP-IP. Check the 'skip-networking' setting in the MySQL configuration file (my.ini on Windows, my.cnf on Unix/Linux). It shall be commented out like '#skip-networking'. If it is not commented out, then do it and restart the MySQL server for the change to take effect.
which when starting the mysql service works for around 5 seconds before the icon returns to being orange.

changing firewall settings did nothing.

if anyone has any ideas on how to fix this, id really appreciate it.

fixed, the fix can be found here: [smallcitydesign.com]

specifically:

Go to the Start menu and click "Run"
Type "services.msc" without the quotes
Sort the columns by Name
Scroll down to the Ms and look for anything with "MySQL"
If you see a MySQL process running, double-click it and click "stop" on the ensuing screen.
Click OK
Left click on your WAMP icon in the system tray and choose...
Restart all services

In other words, UN-INSTALL previous versions of apache and MySQl before you install wamp.
