PHP 4.4 with MySQL 5.x

For some reason, I have to use PHP 4.4 with MySQL 5.x in my installation. When I try to log in to the MySQL with my WampServer's PHP, I got this message:
"Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client"
I then discovered that the MySQL client API version (of PHP 4.4.9 addon) is 3.23.49. Which results in my current problem. Is there any way to upgrade the client API version to something above 4.1?

Make sure u use the exact versions that the server u are matching uses right down to z
