127.0.0.1 worked but don't understand

yes 127.0.0.1 worked and it is my host file but dont under stand why. i am a beginner to php and mysql so this is new to me.have changed host file in the file menu yet though but i know how to and how to get there.
i dont understand host file and why it worked and how to put in the 127.0.0.1 will chage the file so it will work again. same thing with phpadmin same thing it worked please explain why this happens.
