Blank phpmyadmin and sqlbuddy pages... MySQL issues

Been on this issue for quite a while now... having started up with a previledge change in the previous installation of wampserver; since then I have cleanly uninstalled, deleted every instance from file and registry; but still cant make the connection to the MysQL DATABASE. both phpmyadmin and mysqlbuddy return blank pages after periods of loading.

The mysql console just displays "password:"...

All services are running just fine.

Is there any other way to completely wipe out or reset the MySQL instance

I'm getting exactly the same problem as bugmenot1 and it's driving me insane: it's clearly a problem lots of people get, but there's no clear solution that I can see. Words cannot say how grateful I would be for a chink of light in this MySQL darkness!

I've been struggling to get MySQL set up for a couple days now. I had a previous standalone installation of MySQL Server 5.5 running on my Win 7 64bit, but lost the ability to connect to it after restoring my hard drive. I thought WAMP could work where all else has failed, but I'm running into the same issue I've had all along. Basically the MySQL service seems to start OK, but I'm unable to connect to it with any client, including the console and MySQL console. With WAMP, it means that PHPMyAdmin and SQL Buddy show blank pages when you try to connect.

- I uninstall the previous MySQL, delete the MySQL directories C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 505 and in C:\ProgramData\MySQL, and delete data files from the old location of my databases, D:\MySQL Data Files.
- I delete all MySQL registry keys.
- I turn my firewall off.
- I search for my.ini and my.cnf files everywhere - the only ones are in the WAMP directories.
- I install WAMP and start all services - WAMP system tray icon shows green.
- I make sure Skype isn't running. I run Apache > Service > Test Port 80 from the WAMP systray icon and the results show Apache's the only service using the port.
- When I try to connect via the MySQL console I hit Enter at the "Enter password:" prompt. The console goes to the next line and just hangs, then the whole thing closes after about a minute an a system error beep.
- When I go to PHPMyAdmin from the WAMP systray icon it first hung on a blank page, but when I tried again later gives me the error message "MySQL said: #2002 - The server is not responding (or the local MySQL server's socket is not correctly configured)"
- I try doing a telnet from the command prompt to Mysql: telnet localhost 3306, but I get "Connecting to localhost... Could not open connection to the host, on port 3306: Connect failed".

# but will not function as a master if omitted

# Replication Slave (comment out master section to use this)
#
# To configure this host as a replication slave, you can choose between
# two methods :
#
# 1) Use the CHANGE MASTER TO command (fully described in our manual) -
# the syntax is:
#
# CHANGE MASTER TO MASTER_HOST=<host>, MASTER_PORT=<port>,
# MASTER_USER=<user>, MASTER_PASSWORD=<password> ;
#
# where you replace <host>, <user>, <password> by quoted strings and
# <port> by the master's port number (3306 by default).
#
# Example:
#
# CHANGE MASTER TO MASTER_HOST='125.564.12.1', MASTER_PORT=3306,
# MASTER_USER='joe', MASTER_PASSWORD='secret';
#
# OR
#
# 2) Set the variables below. However, in case you choose this method, then
# start replication for the first time (even unsuccessfully, for example
# if you mistyped the password in master-password and the slave fails to
# connect), the slave will create a master.info file, and any later
# change in this file to the variables' values below will be ignored and
# overridden by the content of the master.info file, unless you shutdown
# the slave server, delete master.info and restart the slaver server.
# For that reason, you may want to leave the lines below untouched
# (commented) and instead use CHANGE MASTER TO (see above)
#
# required unique id between 2 and 2^32 - 1
# (and different from the master)
# defaults to 2 if master-host is set
# but will not function as a slave if omitted

YAY! Thanks a lot Steven, MySQL 5.1 works. I'm not sure how to get IPV6 support for 5.5, but at least I have something running.
