MySQL error: #2002 server not responding...

Trying to access phpMyAdmin, I get this error:
#2002 - The server is not responding (or the local MySQL server's socket is not correctly configured)
I'm running the brand-new version 2.2a 32-bit on WinXP.
This forum is riddled with the same issue from others, but I'm not finding any solutions to them. It's a bit disheartening, but maybe there's a quiet savior out there.
