wamp does not resolve partial image url's

I am developing many websites under the www. directory of wamp with most live websites using relative urls for images ie "/imagedirectory/imagename.jpg"
on the live websites this works. on my local wamp it does not.
all help welcome.
!!! I DO NOT want to use virtual domains as the management for this with the number of websites and sub-domains I currently manage would be appalling

You are free to not want to use the VirtualHost, but then, do not come complaining that it does not work.
All your hosters uses the VirtualHost.
The only way that relative links work on your websites AND locally is to use the VirtualHost. Full stop.
