contents of index.php will not display

Hi, I'm new to all this so please bear with me. I've just downloaded and installed WAMP2.1. I've created an index.php file with content:
<?php
echo "Hello World";
?>
I've removed the old index.php and placed this new one in its place. When I click on Localhost from the WAMP icon, in Explorer I just get a white page with Server Configuration, Tools, Your Projects, Your Aliases (looks like some kind of default page). Doesn't matter whether I create a new directory and place the new index.php in it or put the old index.php file back I still get the same page. Anything I can do to rectify the problem? Will be grateful for all help.
