Wamp > Apache > does not work

I have the wampserver installed in order to install and run Wordpress. The first couple of days everything was fine, but all of a sudden the Wamp icon turned orange and remained that way. Now, I have searched days and hours in order to find a solution and read multiple sites and topics, to no avail.

I have no ISS or Skype etc. running, and the web service thingy is unchecked, as is discussed on many websites. etc. etc.

When I check port 80 for Apache, I get the message that port 80 is nót actually being used.

I also changed the port from 80 tot 80 in another attempt, but this resulted in the fact that I could not reach my Wordpress site anymore.

I also followed these instructions, found on [forum.wampserver.com]:

----

"Step 1:

If you are getting the "your port 80 not actually used" in Windows 8

when you test port 80 from wamp icontray > apache > services > test port 80

open httpd.conf from wamp icontray > apache >httpd.conf and locate the line

#Listen 12.34.56.78:80
Listen 80

Make sure the line Listen 80 is uncommented and is as it is above and if you had changed to Listen 0:0:0:0:80 change it back to

Listen 80

Step 2:

Got to the hosts file C:/windows/system32/Drivers/etc and make sure it only contains 127.0.0.1 localhost and not ::1 ie make sure its shows #::1 if the ::1 is present

#::1
127.0.0.1 localhost

If you get an error "403 Access forbidden" when you try to access phpmyadmin go to step 3

Step 3: smiling smiley (Step courtesy Peter mortensen comment posted in stackoverflow.com link stackoverflow.com/questions/8366976/wamp-error-forbidden-you-dont-have-permission-to-access-phpmyadmin-on-this-s)

Change the content of c:/wamp/apps/alias/phpmyadmin.conf to the following

<directory "c:/wamp/apps/phpmyadmin3.4.5/">
Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews
AllowOverride all
Order Deny,Allow
Allow from all
</Directory>

NB: The phpmyadmin remains the version you have installed mine was c:/wamp/apps/phpmyadmin3.4.5/

The main thing here is to remove Deny from All and Allow from 127.0.0.1

Then restart Apache server after this and you are good to go."

Unfortunately, I do not know what to make of these logs, probably due to the fact that I have little knowledge about these things and computers in general.

I have no clue what it can be and am about to give up. Hopefully someone here has ideas to solve the problem.

# This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file. It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:[httpd.apache.org]; for detailed information.
# In particular, see
# <URL:[httpd.apache.org];
# for a discussion of each configuration directive.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/access_log"
# with ServerRoot set to "/usr/local/apache2" will be interpreted by the
# server as "/usr/local/apache2/logs/access_log", whereas "/logs/access_log"
# will be interpreted as '/logs/access_log'.
#
# NOTE: Where filenames are specified, you must use forward slashes
# instead of backslashes (e.g., "c:/apache" instead of "c:\apache"winking smiley.
# If a drive letter is omitted, the drive on which httpd.exe is located
# will be used by default. It is recommended that you always supply
# an explicit drive letter in absolute paths to avoid confusion.

# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's

# Do not add a slash at the end of the directory path. If you point
# ServerRoot at a non-local disk, be sure to specify a local disk on the
# Mutex directive, if file-based mutexes are used. If you wish to share the
# same ServerRoot for multiple httpd daemons, you will need to change at

OK lets start by looking at the 'Apache error log' and the 'php error log' what do they tell you?

If that is not any help then lets look at the 'Windows Event Log` for messages from Apache.

Does any of that help?

Please can you add the answers to there questions to your next post....[forum.wampserver.com]

I have included both error logs in the initial post. Unfortunately I have no idea what to look for. I don't know much about these things at all.

Do you have any idea?

I was thinking: perhaps I should change the port into 8080 again (which I just tried, but suddenly that won't get the green icon anymore...), and subsequently find a way to change the portnumber for Wordpress in some file (don't know which one yet)...

Ok lets start by removing the bad advice you followed :-

1. Fix the Listen command in httpd.conf. It should be

#Listen 12.34.56.78:80
Listen 0.0.0.0:80
Listen [::0]:80

Also check this line in httpd.conf it should be

ServerName localhost:80

Now to the HOSTS file. It should be :-

127.0.0.1  localhost
::1    localhost

2. The changes you made to c:\wamp\alias\phpmyadmin.conf are not especially wrong but are definitely insecure. So they should be

<Directory "d:/wamp/apps/phpmyadmin4.1.14/">
   Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews
   AllowOverride all
  <IfDefine APACHE24>
    Require local
  </IfDefine>
  <IfDefine !APACHE24>
      Order Deny,Allow
	  Deny from all
	  Allow from localhost ::1 127.0.0.1
	</IfDefine>
  php_admin_value upload_max_filesize 128M
  php_admin_value post_max_size 128M
  php_admin_value max_execution_time 360
  php_admin_value max_input_time 360
</Directory>

Now having put things back the way they should be, try starting WAMPServer. If it was runnig while you made the changes the exit WAMPServer and restart it.

Then please tell me what the colour of the wampmanager icon is in the system tray.

If it is not GREEN, check using the wampmanager menus to see which service has not started.

Do wampmanager -> Apache -> Service , If the 'Start/Resume' is green in colour, then Apache has not started

Do wampmanager -> MySQL -> Service , If the 'Start/Resume' is green in colour, then MySQL has not started

If Apache is the service that has not started, try this to see if some other process has grabbed port 80.

wampmanager -> Apache -> Test Port 80

What does that say?

Whatever happens, let me know

I changed things back the way they were. Okay. All the rest I did a couple of times already (not meant to sound ungrateful at all!).

I started the service, but the Wamp icon is (still) orange. I checked, and it is Apache which is not working. I tested the port, and nothing is using it.

If APache has not started then there must either be information that is relevant in the Apache error log OR MORE LIKELY in the Windows Event Log.

Look at the 'windows Event log' using the 'Windows Event Viewer' Find messages probably with a RED icon beside them from Apache and tell me what they are.

Right so

post your C:/wamp/alias/phpmyadmin.conf file unless youfixed the error already.

post your C:/wamp/bin/apache/apache2.4.9/conf/httpd.conf

Ok it looks like something or someone has made a mess of both of those files.

It could be that you are using notepad to edit them.

Can I suggest that you download notepadd++ its a great editor and it is free and can cope with the file types that exist in Wampservr 2.5

I exect that your playing with these files using notepad has messed them up.

It may be simpler to uninstall WAMPServer, delete the c:wamp folder, and then reinstall WAMPServer

Then use notepad++ and not notepad to edit any WAMPServer files from then on.

I can run the installed joomla apps on wampserver but access is denied to phpmyadmin4.1.14 I was able to access it before but suddenly I am locked out. Perhaps there is a password I am missing but the option to use one is not showing. I just get the error

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /phpmyadmin/ on this server.
Apache/2.4.9 (Win32) PHP/5.5.12 Server at localhost Port 80

Recently when I was accessing mail on my windows 8 laptop It required me to use the microsoft password and then reset my computer login. It deleted my local login so I recreated it. I am wondering if my computer login password was used to access phpmyadmin? Any way I have tried all the above without success. The only thing I can think of is to reinstall wampserver.

I am wondering if I can save the www directory and mysql database and just replace them into the new install?

Jim

Hi Jim,

Sounds like a strange situation.

Its always useful to know what versions of everything you are using, could you answer these questions please, [forum.wampserver.com]

This general issue with phpMyAdmin seems to be happening a lot lately and I would love to know what is actually the cause.

How are you trying to access phpMyAdmin i.e. what are you clicking on or what are you entering in the browser URL.

If you want to try the re-install option, read this carefully. It describes how to install a new version of wampserver without loosing anything from your old install. You can then just copy over whats required from the old install.
