DNS Server and Localhost question

I have recently installed WAMP Server 2.5 64 bit
Apache V 2.4.9
PHP V 5.5.12
MySQL V 5.6.17
in a Windows 7 prof SP1 virtual machine 64 bit
WAMP manager is Green
127.0.0.1 localhost
::1 localhost

I am trying to understand the 'Name-based Virtual Host Support' document and keep getting stuck when it comes to the httpd-vhosts.conf entries concerning ServerName and ServerAlias.

I am installing WAMP Server to provide a means of developing a website and as yet I do not have a web host nor a domain name.
Will it be sufficient to use a ServerName such as macnala.test.com and then change the HOSTS file to have macnala.test.com point to 127.0.0.1 the localhost?

Yes that would do, although why make it so complicated.

I tend to use macnala.dev
Other use macnala.local

There is nothing magical about .com
