Help needed restoring from crash
Posted by: ChrisUCLA (---.socal.res.rr.com)

I serve WordPress from home on windows 7 using Wamp.

My hard drive got corrupted (bad sectors), windows restore failed. I purchased a new hard drive, reinstalled win7, wamp, WP.

I need to get my WordPress webpages that I served with wamp back up (I dont need any of the old blog data, just the sites themselves).

I have the entire www folder, wamp folder, and the websites folders which included all of the wordpress files. The www folder has the mysql, sql files, myphp, etc.

How can I get my pages back up and running with what I have?

Thank you,

If yuo have the compete ( and un-corrupted ) \wamp folder, the simple answer woudl be to try this first.

1. Uninstall the WAMPServer you reinstalled.
2. Delete the new \wamp folder and all subfolders
3. copy the old \wamp folder and all its subfolders to the same disk that the old WAMPServer was installed on.
4. run \wamp\wampmanager.exe
5. using the wampmanager menus do :-
wampmanager -> Apache -> Service -> Install Service
wampmanager -> MySQL -> Service -> Install Service

6. Start all services

If as you say everything about your sites was in the \wamp folder all should work as before.

Hey, thanks for helping, I so much appreciate your time!!

I did all that and get "exception exception in module wampmanager.exe at 000f15ao. could not execute run action: The system cannot find the file specified.

Is there something I can do about that?

wamp 2.2, and i looked in the wamp/bin folder and there is an apache and mysql folder in there.. is a php file supposed to be in there? (was reading the wampmanager.conf file and it has a line that says ;wampreleadstart ACTION: run; Filename: "c:/wamp/bin/php/.....) does that have anything to do with it?

Chris,

Yes, the basic structure should be ( your version numbers will be different ) but something like this :-

ok so I found a 2.2a copy of wampserver in a backup zip file by dumb luck, which is the right one. i installed it, turned green so i know the comp is good.

then I copied the php file, uninstalled that wamp, then copied the problem wamp folder that was missing php in bin (per the last post), put the copied workig php file in the bin folder, fired it up and got red. then I followed your directions and ran the 2 installs (apache --service -- install, sql, service install).

now i have yellow and now the localhost shows up and also webgrind which didnt before in the last step when I had red.

Now, When I click myphpadmin from localhost i get:

"MySQL said: Documentation

#2002 - No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.

The server is not responding (or the local server's socket is not correctly configured)."

What should I do now? ... feel like im so close... fingers are crossed till it works

Sounds like the MySQL service has not started i.e. has a problem.

Look in MySQL error log, and also Windows Event Viewer for messages from MYSQL to find out what is the problem

1. Event Viewer says multiple times: "Can't open the mysql.plugin table. Please run mysql_upgrade to create it.

also, every time I click on a mysql program (mysql-upgrade, mysql-debug, mysqltest) a console window opens, text in the console moves fast, then the console vanishes before I can read any of it.

Lets try starting again.

1. save the files you want to use again ( not any config file )
2. Uninstall the wamp 2.2 you last installed
3. delete the \wamp folder you installed wamp2.2 into
4. Install the wamp 2.2 again.
5. Check it works ( all goes green, and phpmyadmin works )

Now anything you do from here, you should do in a way you can undo it if you get a problem. So make a backup of files you may change so you can undo the change if it causes a problem.

Also, when you are running any .exe DONT click on it using explorer, start a command windows and CD into the folder that holds the executable. Then you will be able to see any messages that might be sent by the program and react accordingly.

Also in order to get mysql messed up between first start of WAMPServer and second start of WAMPServer you must be doing something that you are not telling me about. Are you trying to copy databases into the mysql\data folder?

I installed a clean version of the wampserver (2.2) that I salvaged off of the corrupted drive (ran the installer) and got green, so the machine is good.

Next I grabbed the php folder from that working version, and then ran uninstall and tossed the wamp folder.

Then I copied the wamp folder that has my sites once again (the one that was missing the php folder and would not even start) and placed that copy of the php folder from the wampserver 2.2 that I had just tested and uninstalled, into the bin folder.

(remember it wouldnt even start up before this)

Then it started up, and I got red.

After that I followed your direction and ran the 2 installs (apache --service -- install, sql, service install).

This is where I am at now. I havent added or installed anything else. Been waiting at this point because of the yellow, and ran the event viewer as you instructed.

Is it possible that version of wamp is not the exact version of the wamp I am trying to get back up and running, meaning the php file I dropped in may be the wrong version and possibly a conflict causing the sql to run run? Or if the mysql wont start is there a component I can swap out (the mysql_upgrade doest seam to do anything)

Thanks

Lord talk about going round the complicated way.

Start again,
uninstall everything.

Install the wampserver that worked, the one you installed (got a green icon ) and then for some reason decided to removed????

Leave that version installed as it is working.

Then copy the web sites from the old and broken backup to the newly installed and working system.

If this installed WampServer has the same version of MYSQL you can even copy the databases from the old_broken version to the new one probably without any hassle and maybe get your WP databases back or at least some of them.

ok re-installed the 2.2e. Started right up, green light. Ok, I have the websites folder copied over to the root directory, where the wamp folder is, as was before the crash.

What other files do I need to copy from the crashed version? You mentioned i can copy the mysql databases over, Im green on this stuff so can you tell me which files those are?

Thank you

OK if the databases are MYISAM then they each live in a folder under \wamp\bin\mysql\mysqlx.y.z\data\????

Where ??? is the name of your database, and all the required files live in those folders, copy the whole folder BUT ONLY YOUR DATABASES, Not the one called 'mysql' or 'performance_schema' there is also one called 'test' only copy that if you actually used 'test' for something

They are only guaranteed to move if you are moving them to the same version of MySQL.

If your databases are INNODB they live in \wamp\bin\mysql\mysqlx.y.z\data\ in files called ibdata1, ib_logfile0 and ib_logfile2 unless you did anything special when creating the database to place the data somewhere else.
There will also be one folder for each database in \wamp\bin\mysql\mysqlx.y.z\data\[dbname] containing a set of .frm files, one for each table, these have to get copied also

OK Chris,

So far so good!

Need a bit more information about the database that does not work?
1. What type of database ( MYISAM/INNODB/OTHER )
2. What errors are you seeing in the MySQL error log or Event Viewer ( if any )
3. Can you view actual data in this problem database using phpMyAdmin or do you just see the schema?

We will get to upgrading WAMPServer once this one is working!!! Lets not confuse the issue quite yet.

Innodb, yes I click browse with the not working sites database selected, and yes there appears to be lines and data.

Do you remember which version of MySQL you were using when you created this database? It woudl appear to have been an older version than the one you are currently using?

I don't recall using a different wamp version, however, that site did work like the others before the crash, same wamp. Is there a way to get more info about the specifics for that non working database?
