Security Measures

I'm a newbie and is going to ask some silly questions - so please bear with me.

I've successfully loaded and run WAMPSERVER on my Window PC . What are the risks I expose myself to?

1) If my PC is connected to a router and from there to WWW - does it mean that my IP Address is now visible to the rest of the world and I'm opening my PC to be hacked?

2) what are the security measures that I can take to make my PC more secure when running WAMPSERVER?

Please advice.

Thanks.

Andrew

are you looking to make wampserver accessible over the internet?

if not make sure there is a black padlock in the middle of the wamp tray icon

this can be removed/added by cleft click>put server ON/OFF-LINE

Offline means it cannot be access from outside.
Online means it can provided the router is setup to allow port 80 to be forawrd to that machine.

The internet runs on port 80 , so its really as secure as your computer is against hackers in the first place with out the server...

the only issue is you may have details, username, emails, password stored for your website which could be of risk , just as personal photos and files on ur pc may be.

MOST importantly make sure a firewall is enabled in your router and is UP TO DATE. alot of people never update theirs at all

Steven:

Thanks for the advice. Decided to disable port 80 on my Linksys router when I'm not using wampserver for testing. Maybe that is the safest option?

Hey,

You can download my patch and use component ChangeServerAvailability winking smiley
It allows you to open WampServer only to local, LAN or WAN (everybody).

So you can ever decide to allow everybody to access you webserver or not, without closing your port is the router...

well if you disable port 80 totally your internet may not work... if you just turn off a port forward of port 80 then that is ok
