mysql root password

I've foolishly messed around with mysql password and now can't get into phpmyadmin screen (get a error 1045 access denied message). I've tried resetting using instructions running command line referring to text file with this in it:-
UPDATE mysql.user SET Password=PASSWORD('') WHERE User='root';
FLUSH PRIVILEGES;

However, no matter what I do, I can't get back to phpmyadmin.

Any help appreciated.
