php mail

hi i have a problem to send a mail using php mail() option it gives a error saying
"Failed to connect to mailserver at "localhost" port 25, verify your "SMTP" and "smtp_port" setting in php.ini or use ini_set()"
Am a fresher to php scripting plz help me out .
