How to make WAMP secure

Hi,
I have recently finished a home weather station project which has a web interface hosted on a machine in my house which I want to be able to connect to and update remotely.

I was hoping that someone could explain to me what type of precautions I should take before opening the port etc. I don't have too much experience with this so a few pointers would be welcome.

I was hoping someone could help me out with securing mysql which seems to have a a couple of root accounts. Is it better to delete/modify these? Please make me aware of any other potential dangers in opening up a connection.

I understand that wampserver is quite open initially to aid in development so I would be grateful for a few pointers as to the precautions I should take.

Many Thanks
