wamp5 mysql password change

I have tried to change the pw in mysql a few times and have had to reload wamp5 due to getting error message,

There is ref to this problem on internet but after many many searches have not found solution as to

How do I change the root password in mysql so that it does not mess up php myadmin...

I tried the giude for change password on your site and I do get the user name and password prompt when starting phpmyadmin now but when I enter the user=root and password=mypassword then I get the error says "#1045 - Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: YES)"

how can I fix this

checked step 12 and line reads ok with same password entered into phpmyadmin, it is just 4 letters so very easy.

I had this same problem before and had to reinstall then leave root password blank which I must fix so I can use the system securley.

What can I try now

download resetmysql, then follow password guide again

did it and reset password ok

restarted and logged into phpmyadmin with
user=root
password is blank

now get message in phpmyadmin=Cannot load mcrypt extension. Please check your PHP configuration.

is this important now or should I still just follow your "change password doc again" ??
