WAMP5/Apache/php problems
Posted by: Gerry (---.185.189.72.cfl.res.rr.com)

I installed wamp5 and can't get it to work properly. Here's what's happening:

I am running XP with Firefox as my browser. I created a "hello world" test script in notepad (with Saved as set to All Files). When I try to open the .php file, I get a firefox dialog box that says: "You have chosen to open phptest.php which is a php script from: c:\xxxxx\" . Below this, it defaults to "phpfile" as the application to open the .php file. If I click "OK", it opens the same file in dreamweaver, instead of showing the resolved script in firefox. by the way, if I type in '//localhost/", it now pulls up one of my old local files, instead of the wamp screen as it used to.

By the way, this is my most recent Apache error log:

[Mon Apr 21 21:53:23 2008] [warn] Init: Session Cache is not configured [hint: SSLSessionCache]
[Mon Apr 21 21:53:23 2008] [warn] pid file C:/wamp/bin/apache/apache2.2.6/logs/httpd.pid overwritten -- Unclean shutdown of previous Apache run?
[Mon Apr 21 21:53:25 2008] [notice] Apache/2.2.6 (Win32) mod_ssl/2.2.6 OpenSSL/0.9.8e PHP/5.2.5 configured -- resuming normal operations
[Mon Apr 21 21:53:25 2008] [notice] Server built: Sep 5 2007 08:58:56
[Mon Apr 21 21:53:25 2008] [notice] Parent: Created child process 1428
[Mon Apr 21 21:53:26 2008] [warn] Init: Session Cache is not configured [hint: SSLSessionCache]
[Mon Apr 21 21:53:26 2008] [notice] Child 1428: Child process is running
[Mon Apr 21 21:53:26 2008] [notice] Child 1428: Acquired the start mutex.
[Mon Apr 21 21:53:26 2008] [notice] Child 1428: Starting 250 worker threads.
[Mon Apr 21 21:53:26 2008] [notice] Child 1428: Starting thread to listen on port 80.

I do have php_mysqli checked and my wamp icon is white. My PHP error log is empty.

I have checked and Apache is using port 80, I do not have IIS running.

I have read through this board and other resources, and have tried just about everything to make this work, with no luck yet. Any help will be appreciated.

Did you ever had any other webserver? If yes, did you uninstall it and clean its registry before installing this wamp?

Yes, a few years ago I manually installed all three wamp components, but I uninstalled all of them after some time. More recently, I reinstalled wamp to my d: partition and since it didn't work, I reinstalled to my c: partition, where it is now. No, I have not gone into the registry to manually uninstall anything.

That's the problem; just uninstall everything, run regedit, search and delete all instances of apache, mysql, wampapache, and wampmysql, then reinstall this wamp

Thanks for your response. I did everything as you suggested, but I am still having the some issues. In httpd.conf, I pointed my Document Root and Directory settings correctly to: C:/inetpub/wwwroot/ and restarted the services, now I am getting a 500 Internal Server Error. Here's what my Apache error log looks like:

Thanks for your help. I changed the document_root and directory back to c:/wamp/www/ in httpd.conf, and also move a few of my directories from inetpub/wwwroot to it. As it is now, only my phptest.php file "hello word" file is showing correctly, the other "real" files show a 404 Not Found error - "The requested URL /contact.php was not found on this server". Here's the Apache error log for this incident:

I deleted the .htaccess file. Heres what the form looks like:

<?php
include_once "header.php";

include_once "general_menu.php";

$success = false;

if (isset($_POST['submitted'])) {

//$cname = mysql_real_escape_string($_POST['cname']);
// $from = mysql_real_escape_string($_POST['cemail']);
// $subject = mysql_real_escape_string($_POST['csubject']);
//$message = mysql_real_escape_string($_POST['cmessage']);

$cname = $_POST['cname'];
$from = $_POST['cemail'];
$subject =$_POST['csubject'];
$message = $_POST['cmessage'];

$headers=$from;
try {

if (mail("admin@xxxxxxxx.com", $subject, $message, $headers)) {
echo "<font color='blue'><b>Your message has been successfully sent to admin.</b></font>";
$success = true;
} else {
echo "<font color='red'><b>Unable to send your request. Please contact admin using email.</b></font>";
}
} catch(Exception $ex) {
echo "Caught exception: " . $ex->getMessage();
}
}

if ($success == false) {

?>

<div align="center">

<form method="post" action="contact.php">
<input type="hidden" name="submitted" value="contact" />

Listen 8080

then restart wamp

go to ur browser and use localhost:8080/cpntact.php

Steven,
I changed to port 8080 and restarted three times, but I keep getting this message:

"Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at localhost." This comes up for all the pages, even "hello world".

Here's my apache error log for this event:

[Thu Apr 24 10:49:38 2008] [notice] Child 2780: Starting thread to listen on port 8080.

[Thu Apr 24 10:54:34 2008] [notice] Child 2752: Acquired the start mutex.

[Thu Apr 24 10:54:34 2008] [notice] Child 2752: Starting thread to listen on port 8080.

To my untrained eyes, everything seems ok here, but I could be wrong. The wamp logo is all white.

Thanks.

Yes, I am sure that it is contact.php, it is from a working website. My entire site is php. I did the 'hello world' script in notepad, saved it as php, with file type = All Files, and it worked before, but not now.

At this point should I consider reinstalling wamp?

Here is my httpd.conf:

#
# This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file. It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:[httpd.apache.org]; for detailed information.
# In particular, see
# <URL:[httpd.apache.org];
# for a discussion of each configuration directive.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/foo.log"
# with ServerRoot set to "C:/Program Files/Apache Software Foundation/Apache2.2" will be interpreted by the
# server as "C:/Program Files/Apache Software Foundation/Apache2.2/logs/foo.log".
#
# NOTE: Where filenames are specified, you must use forward slashes
# instead of backslashes (e.g., "c:/apache" instead of "c:\apache"winking smiley.
# If a drive letter is omitted, the drive on which Apache.exe is located
# will be used by default. It is recommended that you always supply
# an explicit drive letter in absolute paths to avoid confusion.

#
# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# Do not add a slash at the end of the directory path. If you point
# ServerRoot at a non-local disk, be sure to point the LockFile directive
# at a local disk. If you wish to share the same ServerRoot for multiple
# httpd daemons, you will need to change at least LockFile and PidFile.
#
ServerRoot "c:/wamp/bin/apache/apache2.2.8"

#
# Listen: Allows you to bind Apache to specific IP addresses and/or
# ports, instead of the default. See also the <VirtualHost>
# directive.
#
# Change this to Listen on specific IP addresses as shown below to
# prevent Apache from glomming onto all bound IP addresses.
#
#Listen 12.34.56.78:80
Listen 8080

# Redirect permanent /foo [localhost]

#
# Alias: Maps web paths into filesystem paths and is used to
# access content that does not live under the DocumentRoot.
# Example:
# Alias /webpath /full/filesystem/path
#
# If you include a trailing / on /webpath then the server will
# require it to be present in the URL. You will also likely

# ScriptAlias: This controls which directories contain server scripts.
# ScriptAliases are essentially the same as Aliases, except that
