Problems running WAMP5

Hi!

I just installed WAMP5 1.7.2 on Windows XP Professional. When starting WAMP Server it says "2 services running - offline" and I can hear my computer getting about three times louder becouse of the stress WAMP sets it through (and I have a great, up to date computer). When trying to access localhost or 127.0.0.1, the browser loads for an eternity without anything happening.

What seems to be the problem?

Thanks in advance!

How fun for you...

I first tried to set wamp server as an exception for the firewall, without any result. I then completely shut down the firewall, yet again there was no result.

What else can I do?

It's not just fun, but a lot of fun since I've sold my Compaq sr2150nx w/ Intel Celeron 356 / 3.33GHz for $350 and Acer 17' LCD for $150 then got this HP xw4400 w/ Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 / 1.86 GHz for $272 including 4GB Ram upgraded and Acer AL2216WBD 22" Widescreen LCD for $140; of course, this system works much better than my old one and the 22' lcd is so great and I'm still earning almost $90. BTW, I've just upgraded my wamp to all latest such as mysql 6, php 6, phpmyadmin 2.10.2, ssl 3 and everything still work as expected w/ my Vista Business and Norton 360.

Anyway, what firewall are you using? If using vista, it's not just firewall but also defender and UAC

Good luck,

The one that ships with Windows XP. I know it's probably crap but I haven't had any problems up until now.

For some reason, I've always disable that one and use 3-party anitvirus+firewall such as McAfee, Norton, so on

BTW, you don't happen to have any other wamp before, right? If yes, check and delete if you have any php.ini in windows folder.

I once installed WAMP5 a few months ago and encountered the same problems as I have now, and then uninstalled. Before that I haven't had WAMP installed since before me formatting my computer.

I found no php.ini in my Windows folder.

Either re-format your hard drive or get a new 160GB for 10 bucks, then firstly install only 2 things: windows and wamp, and this must works except you forget to disable firewall from windows service pack 2. If wamp works as expected then install antivirus+firewall and other add-on for server.

I would prefer not to reformat my hard drive, and I don't see a reason for me to buy a new one since I already have two + one external.

He he... he he... ;-)

For server, I've alway have 3 machines and setup as redundant server so primary down, secondary immediately kick in until primary back on and the third is the backup; primary and secondary each has 1TB (500GB x 2) and backup has 2TB (500GB x 4); in addition, there are 1TB NAS (500GB x 2) which can be accessed from any desktop or laptop w/i LAN; of course, all these 3 are for server, and I'm using my laptop for other computing needs, even web designs.

Since wamp version 1.4.4 until now, I've installed wamp on more than 100 machines for friends, co-workers, relatives w/ various brands and os, and never has any problem what so ever; even remote access to help installed or solved problem for a lot of users in this forum, too. Here is one of them

[forum.wampserver.com]

Anyway, what I meant is install clean windows and wamp on a blank hard drive and it MUST works; then, reinstall all other software 1 by 1 to find out which soft is the cause that stop or prevent wamp works as expected. Of course, you can always install wamp on your current hard drives w/ a lot of software on it as long as you are ABLE to figure out what might stop or prevent wamp to work properly.

Have fun,
