switching to php4 in wamp5 1.7.1

Hi everybody,
First post.
I installed 1.7.1 and almost immediately ran into trouble.
When switching to php4 it loses connection to the database and the site is inaccessible.
This didn't happen in the preceding version 1.7.0.
Please look into this.
Apparently it switches to mysqli?
Looking forward to help on this issue.
