phpmyadmin access denied

Hi

I'm so sorry to trouble you with this, as I know it has been covered so many times in this forum, but I have been coming back to it for several days now thinking that it must be something glaringly obvious as I have followed all the instructions both in the Configuration FAQ documentation and also from other threads (primarily that from Tomfmason which seems to have worked for others), but I'm still receiving an error.

I have changed the root password and have also configured my config.inc file and I am still receiving the following message on phpmyadmin:
#1045 - Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: YES)

I have uninstalled several times and started again from scratch thinking that I may have altered something by accident in a previous install, but each time I end up at the same place, and I'm starting to tear my hair out now.

If anyone has any indication of where I may be going wrong, I'd be really grateful.

Many thanks

Vicky
